Prevent gait disorders in old age
with stapp one

Gait disorders are widespread and can have various causes. Unfortunately, this disorder is accompanied by an increased risk for falls. A fall can require extensive treatment and follow-up costs. stappone is a sensitive equipment that provides objective real-life movement data and contributes significantly to fall prevention in this area of treatment and research.

Elderly people experience gait disorders at high rate and therefore have an increased risk of falling. Physiotherapy or occupational therapy, that includes gait training, can counteract imminent falls. The aim is to take away the patient’s insecurities, and to enable them to lead a “normal” everyday life, despite existing limitations.

Typical geriatric causes of gait disorders are, for example, sarcopenia, dementia or medication:

  • Typical for sarcopenia is a slower, short-step or wide-based gait, which has to do with the loss of muscle mass and strength in old age.
  • Dementia is usually accompanied by a restricted mobility, which leads to more falls.
  • Pharmaceuticals can also have a negative effect on the gait pattern through their anticholinergic side effects and effects on the central nervous system.

Stappone’s innovative technology can monitore these gait disorders. The intelligent sensor soles measure the patient’s foot pressure and other time-based parameters. With the corresponding medical software, inappropriate biomechanic stress and deficits can be identified and appropriate therapy interventions can be defined. The live biofeedback allows patients to have their deficits objectively visualized. This increases the patients compliance when they are doing exercises at home. With the resulting objective data, the course of possible improvement or worsening can be easily visualized and read over a longer period of time.

Stappone has many benefits. For example, in physiotherapy patients can train their postural control. Wearing the sensor soles and using the live biofeedback they can objectively see their therapeutical success during the assessments. In addition, the movement data can be recorded, saved and compared. This is not only beneficial for the treatment itself, but also provides important research data.
